Connecticut’s independent home care PCAs participated in a demonstration Thursday, September 23, at 210 Capitol Ave. at 4:00 PM. Workers, who are majority Black, Latina, and working-class women making $16.25 per hour, are demanding livable wages, paid time off, health insurance, job security and a path to retirement from Governor Ned Lamont’s Administration. PCAs currently do not enjoy these basic benefits.
PCA union contracts with the New England Health Care Employees Union, District 1199, SEIU, in representation of 10,000 home care workers and 6,000 home care consumers across the state, expired as of June 30th, 2021. The Union is waiting for Governor Lamont to share the state’s vision and economic proposal for the future of home care, and his administration’s plan to invest roughly $240 million provided by the federal government in ARPA funds to improve home care services in Connecticut and lift workers out of poverty.
Home care PCAs, along with nursing home workers, and group home caregivers continue fighting together to ensure that the Long-Term Care Workers Bill of Rights positively transforms the life of every worker in the long-term care industry, as well as every consumer and patient in need of Medicaid long-term care services in Connecticut.
