The New England Health Care Employees Union, SEIU District 1199, withdrew the intent to strike notice sent to Connecticut nursing homes, which was effective on May 1st.

While the members’ strike vote remains in effect, the strike deadline has been removed at all 20 nursing homes affected. A new deadline has not been set.

“We have seen a meaningful commitment to work for appropriate funding. We’re optimistic that with hard work and support from Governor Ned Lamont’s administration and our friends in the legislature we can achieve the funding that we need to get good contracts and avert a strike,” said Rob Baril, president of SEIU 1199 New England.

The National Labor Relations Act requires labor unions to give health care employers a minimum of 10 days’ notice before going on strike.

“The governor has heard the workers’ demands for wage increases. We have withdrawn our immediate strike deadline, and we are hopeful that we won’t have to resend additional deadline notices,” said Baril.

Nursing home workers are demanding additional funding in the state budget to cover wage raises for the next two years. The governor’s initial budget proposal did not include additional funding for nursing homes workers.

After receiving a meager 2% raise in wages since 2015, if the new state budget fails to include additional funding then nursing home workers would not be able to get any raises in the next two fiscal years.

SEIU 1199 union members have a long history of success fighting for health care workers’ rights and quality services for people in need. The union represents nursing home workers classified as registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, maintenance, receptionists, recreation and dietary staff.
