Over 80 care managers and support staff with the Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut have officially formed their union with SEIU District 1199. Over 60% of employees voted YES for the union, sending a clear message of unity across the agency’s many departments.
Cari Pierides, a Care Manager, explains why she supported forming a union with her coworkers:
I want a voice. I want to feel secure in knowing if I have concerns or issues that they will be addressed in a productive and positive way. I want to be able to contribute to discussions on policy and procedure with a goal of positively impacting my coworkers and supervisors. I want myself and all my coworkers to feel confident in the work they are doing day in and day out.
The Agency on Aging is one of five non-profits in Connecticut that oversee resource allocation to seniors relying on homecare and other state and federally funded support programs.
Responsible for the region around New Haven, the new bargaining unit unit includes Care Mangers, Care Manager Assistants, Transition Coordinators responsible for the Money Follows the Person Program, Billing specialists, a Data Processing unit, and professionals in the CHOICES call-center program and the Foster Grandparent program.
Congratulations and welcome to the newest group of 1199 members! Every day, more and more workers related to the home care field are joining together to build a strong voice for ourselves and our clients.
