The twin pandemics of COVID-19 and racism have exposed that, too often, essential workers are treated as if we’re expendable. Over the past months, thousands of PCAs have signed petitions, made phone calls, attended planning meetings, protests and contract negotiations (in person and over Zoom)! These victories are a result of the tremendous leadership of the Homecare Organizing Committee as we expand the fight for racial and economic justice in long term care.
We’re proud to announce new upcoming benefits:
- More money in our checks after July 1st! PCAs will see our pay increase to $16.25; those already making more will receive a 1.5% increase. There will be a lump sum hazard pay of 7.5% for all hours worked April 1-June 30th IN ADDITION to the scheduled raises effective July 1st. Finally, all PCAs who work any hours on July 4th will receive time and a half pay for any hours worked.
- Increased Personal Protective Equipment, including 5 cloth masks mailed directly to PCAs. Through our actions, we’ve pushed the State to distribute nearly 600,000 surgical masks and almost 300,000 pairs of gloves to our consumers for PCA use. The State will now ALSO mail 5 reusable cloth masks directly to every PCA. More PPE can be requested by PCAs or Consumers at Use Link Here – for DSS or Use Link Here – for DDS . (If you are unable to fill out the State’s forms for any reason, please contact the Workforce Council directly (PCACouncil@ct.gov or 860-418-6370) OR fill out the Union’s PPE Shortage Form.
- Paid Sick Time & Extended Paid Family Leave during COVID. PCAs are eligible for up to 2 weeks (max 80 hours) of paid sick leave for COVID related reasons (Use link here) AND up to 10 additional weeks of paid family leave if you have a child home from school due to COVID (Use Link Here – For Emergency FML)
The struggle for respect and dignity for ourselves, our consumers, and all working families is more critical than ever today. Please join us at a meeting over Zoom in July to learn more:
All meetings will be held over Zoom; please email covidresponse@seiu1199ne.org and we’ll send you the link and the call-in number!
