For our consumers, for our loved ones, for ourselves
Funding for quality home care is under attack, and with Personal Care Attendants (PCAs) and home care consumers scattered all across the country, it’s hard to stand up with the strength we need to defend our critical programs.
PCAs across the nation have united in SEIU Healthcare to successfully protect consumers and loved ones against cuts to the care they need. And as an organization with more than 500,000 caregivers, we’re able to speak with a strong voice that lawmakers hear.
Now Connecticut’s Personal Care Attendants have the opportunity to come together in Home Care Workers United – District 1199-SEIU; a branch of SEIU Healthcare.
Why We’re Uniting
Caregivers united in SEIU Healthcare have been able to stop lawmakers in Massachusetts, Illinois, Oregon and California from cutting the programs on which our consumers and loved ones rely. In many more states, we’ve made sure lawmakers are unable to even try to cut the number of hours of care our consumers are eligible to receive.
There are additional challenges to our profession as well. Far too often, we’re forced to leave the consumers or loved ones we care for in order to find work that offers benefits, paid time off or more hours.
For some consumers, the high turnover of the home care provider profession can get in the way of receiving the stable care they need. It’s a heart-wrenching decision for any caregiver to have to make–but the reality is that we cannot care for others if we cannot make a living that enables us to care for ourselves and our families.
Personal Care Attendants in 10 states have already united in SEIU Healthcare and worked together to make home care more stable and reliable for consumers. We’ve won paid sick time, paid days off, access to health insurance and increased wages. And now Connecticut home care workers are ready to join them.
It’s time to win improvements for Connecticut’s PCAs, their families and consumers.
